Forex margin calculator
Work out the required margin to open a forex position from lot size, contract size, and leverage. If the account currency is not the base currency, enter how many account units equal 1 unit of the base. This page does not fetch market prices.
What forex margin means
Required margin is the amount of account funds a broker sets aside so you can open a leveraged position. It is a fraction of the position’s value in account currency. Larger lots or lower leverage need more margin.
How leverage fits in
Leverage is written as 1:100, 1:50, and so on. The calculator uses the number after the colon. Required margin is position value in the account currency divided by that number. Presets are examples for the calculator, not a broker’s available ratios.
How to use this calculator
Choose a pair (or type base and quote), set the account currency, lot size, contract size, and leverage. If the account currency differs from the base, fill 1 BASE = ___ ACCOUNT. Press Calculate. The result follows only the numbers you typed.
How to read the result
The headline is required margin in the account currency. Position units are lot × contract size. Position value is that notional in the account currency. Required margin is that value divided by leverage.
Margin is not a loss limit
Required margin is not your maximum loss, not a stop loss, not the full cost of the trade, and not an amount that is spent when you click buy or sell. A leveraged position can lose more than the margin. This tool also does not calculate margin level, free margin, equity, margin call, or stop out.
Rates you type are not live
Any conversion field is a number you supply so base notional can be shown in the account currency. It is not a live quote and is not taken from a market feed.
