How to use XM on MetaTrader 4
MT4 is a desktop and mobile terminal that talks to an XM trade server. It is not the member area. A member-area password will not open MT4, and an MT4 password will not open the website cabinet.
What MT4 is on XM
MetaTrader 4 is a chart and order terminal. XM hosts the server name and the login number. You install the build XM points you to, or you open their web version if they still offer one for MT4.
MT4 is not MT5 with a different skin. Order books, pending types, and some symbol lists differ. If your account was opened for MT5 only, this terminal will not accept that login.
Install from the path XM shows
Download only from the link or store listing XM displays for your device. Third-party “MT4 packs” can point at the wrong server. After install, open File → Login to Trade Account (wording can vary) and type the login, password, and server string from the member area — not a guess.
Confirm you are on the XM server
The bottom of the terminal should show a server name that matches the one XM printed for that account. If the list is empty or the connection stays disconnected, you are not in a live or demo session yet. Do not place an order until the status is connected.
The MT4 ticket
New Order opens a ticket with volume, stop loss, and take profit fields if the symbol allows them. Market execution and pending (buy limit, sell limit, buy stop, sell stop) are the usual MT4 set. One-click trading, if you enable it, skips the confirmation dialog — treat that as a safety choice, not a shortcut to profit.
When the terminal is the wrong product
If login is rejected, check whether the account is labelled MT5 or web-only. Use the MT5 page for that path. Password resets for the terminal are done in the member area, not inside this article.
If the account is MT5, use that guide. Login and start-trading cover the cabinet and the first live ticket.
Common questions
Can I use my website password in MT4?
Usually no. Terminal logins are issued separately. Copy the MT4 login XM shows in the member area.
Is MT4 the same as MT5?
No. Different terminal, different server, often a different account. See the MT5 guide if that is what XM assigned.
Does a connected MT4 mean I should trade live size?
Connection only means the session is up. Live trading can lose money. Demo is for practice.
Where do I change the MT4 password?
Use the member-area controls XM provides. This page does not reset passwords.
